Dear HomeSource Families

As quite a few of your students have been working on Advanced Placement assignments over the summer, we wanted to give you some outstanding news!

For many years, HomeSource has offered homeschooled high school students a chance to earn college credit through AP courses. These classes provide challenging and interesting courses across the high school curriculum, and are open to any high school student who is willing to rise to the expectations of AP.

This year, should our Charter be passed by the Bethel School Board on August 30th, our AP courses will include World History, Comparative Government and Politics, Psychology, English Language and Composition (British Literature), and Latin.

We have a new teacher for World History and for Government. Mary Jo Thomas comes to HomeSource from a distinguished career teaching and heading the Social Science department at South Eugene High School. She has worked directly with the College Board as a scorer for history exams, a leader of other scorers, and a consultant. She is excited about meeting our families and delighted to be working in our unique environment.

The World History course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10 a.m. The Government class will meet on the same days , from 10 to 11:30. The courses are separate, but students who take both will find that they have a better understanding of both subjects. Students who also take AP English will find that the English composition course also supports the work they do in History and Government, as similar writing skills are required for all AP courses.

AP Psychology is a new course at HomeSource, and one of the fastest growing, most popular AP courses nationwide. AP Psychology treats psychology as a science. Topics to be covered include brain structure and development, theories of learning, and social behavior, among others. Karen Zeller, an outstanding instructor with whom many of you are already acquainted, will teach this course, AP English, and all of HomeSource’s high school Latin courses.

Meeting Planned For High School Students Interested in Advanced Placement

ImageDate: Tuesday August 24
Time: 6:30 PM
Place: HomeSource

Purpose of Meeting:
Parents and Students meet with Mary Jo Thomas, Karen Zeller and Mitzi Hose to discuss Advanced Placement options and check in on summer reading and assignments for AP World History and AP Comparative Government and Politics.

We are diligently working on opening as HomeSource Family Charter in September. The details of the charter and how to let us know your intent to enroll will become available next week.

I know that Mary Jo Thomas will carry on the great tradition of our former AP Instructor Barbara Smith-Gillespie and our talented Karen Zeller as she brings the very best to your students.

For those students currently signed up for the AP History and Government classes, Mitzi Hose will be contacting you directly.

Thank you for your patience on these matters as we transition this year to a self-sustaining program for homeschoolers that will continue to reach new heights of excellence in providing instruction and support.

Sincerely,
Paula Praus-Williamson
Executive Director, HomeSource
